Bruno Mausgrad (b.1987, Kent) is an artist based at Acme Studios, London. His practice explores painting as a mode of intensified attention and disclosure: a means of becoming more sensitive to what ordinarily remains peripheral, overlooked or unresolved within experience.

The work often begins with an everyday encounter, when something interrupts habitual perception and exerts a pull: a visual sign that provokes curiosity and invites a return. Mausgrad is interested in this movement from looking to attending, and in desire as a force within it—not as an impulse to possess, but as an orientation towards something not yet known. Painting becomes a way of sustaining and responding to this initial call. Through layering, glazing, repetition, erasure and shifts of scale, encountered forms are transformed until their identities become unstable, while something of the original encounter persists.

Underlying the work is an intuition that reality exceeds what is immediately apparent: that the everyday might contain more than it initially discloses. Painting becomes a means of approaching this possibility, creating an interface between the intimate and the cosmic, and asking whether sustained attention might enlarge the circle of what reality is understood to encompass.

Mausgrad received his degree in English Literature from King’s College, University of Cambridge (2009).
